SEM images and chemical mapping of a typical clinker sample. Silicon and calcium energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy maps allow the identification of alite (Ca₃SiO₅) as the large grains and belite (Ca₂SiO₄) as the small ones, since the Si and Ca signals are lower and higher, respectively, for alite.
